Rituals

Clearly inspired by Magic and Yugioh, this game seeks to be our portrayal of an indirect Wizard fight. Players play monsters with holes in their cards to show potential on Summoning Circles, large cards that cause the player to lose if they sustain enough hits. The card holes were the main hook, strategically placing your monsters on top of each other so that the stats and abilities visible put you in the best position to destroy your opponents monsters and destroy their Summoning Circles. Like the rest of the group, I made monsters but my real baby was the esoteries and the magic stack. I came up with the idea of the players’ more direct magic dueling for dominance being represented by sharing one stack to play them on. They originally only had one effect but then we looked into the Tarot and saw that each one had an inverse meaning for when it’s upside down- and of course the card would seem upside down to one layer and right-side up to the other so the two effects came quite naturally. Smaller Spell effects were designed to decrease dead hands from too many monsters and provide a way to stop the strange ongoing effects and rule changes of the Esoteries. In addition to being in charge of the magic stack design, I also sketched some simple art assets for the monsters while Yan took the spells and esoteries. This group would eventually go on to work together on “The Maze”.

The immensely proud group was myself, Zane Draper, Christian Granville, and Yanting Cheung.
